Help us raise awareness and funds for girls STEM educational opportunities in the DC area
We are Priya Kasargod-Staub, Saara Lee, and Sophie Katz, eighth-grade students at Alice Deal Middle School in Washington, DC. As part of a school project this year, we were asked to identify a community to which we belong, identify its key challenges, and implement actionable solutions. We chose to focus on enhancing educational opportunities for girls interested in STEM education. Specifically, we seek to support awareness of, and funds for, Stem for Her, a Washington DC-based non-profit that creates STEM education opportunities for girls at area public schools. We launched a partnership with this organization and would like to invite you to join us in a 5K Fun Run fundraiser to advance their important work.
We will start and end on the corner of Chesapeake Street and 41st Street located in Northwest DC. The course takes us around the Alice Deal Middle School campus twice, starting and ending at the designated location. This family-friendly event will occur rain or shine and welcomes runners and walkers!

We believe that with the right programs and support, the representation of women in STEM fields could grow significantly. Currently, women make up less than half of the STEM workforce, with participation at about 35%, according to the National Science Foundation. While this represents notable progress over the past decade, organizations like Stem for Her are key to accelerating this growth. Additionally, many young people, particularly girls, live in communities where they lack access to educational opportunities. In some cases, societal pressures push girls away from STEM fields, steering them toward low-wage jobs or traditional roles as mothers and caregivers. Stem for Her offers a plethora of opportunities for teen girls to explore their passions, pursue meaningful careers, and break through these barriers.

The STEM for Her Mission is to promote education to create awareness, excitement, and opportunities among girls and young women to launch successful STEM-related careers. Through direct exposure to hands-on experiences, mentors and role models and other programs, STEM for Her enables girls and young women to envision the path to an education and a career in STEM. They develop their own programs and partner with girl leaders, community organizations and corporations with a strong focus on the underserved populations in the Washington, DC Metro Area.
We are very proud of our partnership with this amazing organization, and we are happy to say that we will have several teens who work with STEM for Her attending our Fun Run, who are happy to answer any questions you may have and to talk about what the organization does in our community.
We would love to have your help to pull off the Fun Run!
